Your Investment in the Tenderloin Childcare Center Scholarship Fund will

Help a Child By providing access to the early learning opportunities and emotional support that will lay the foundation for their academic success.

Help a Family By allowing parents to obtain the skills and/or education necessary to gain and maintain meaningful employment and housing.

Help a Community By giving disadvantaged families the support needed to lead dignified, self-sufficient lives.

The Tenderloin Childcare Center (TLC) Scholarship Fund is a group of investors dedicated to helping underserved children in San Francisco gain access to the early learning opportunities and emotional support that will lay the foundation for their academic success.

The TLC Scholarship Fund enables TLC's educators to focus on providing the best possible early education and learning environment for its students and not on the all too real conerns of funding and economic stability.

Studies show that extreme poverty and unstable living conditions can be particularly detrimental during a child’s first five years.

Benefits of quality childcare include:
•Improved literacy rates
•Better high school graduation rates
•Reduced chances of being involved in crime
•Lower chances of being addicted to drugs and alcohol
•Fewer teen pregnancies
•Greater earnings as adults

TLC provides infants, toddlers and preschoolers with:

•Full-day childcare for 66 children ages 0-5
•A specialized curriculum focused on art, music, science and nature, pre-reading and gross motor play
•A high teacher to child ratio
•Regular assessments of cognitive, emotional and social development
•Social services for parents including crisis management, counseling and referrals
•Hot, nutritious meals, plus snacks served daily
•Up-to-date immunizations for all children
•Annual vision, hearing and dental screenings
•Warmth, stability and consistency

An Oasis for Families

Maria's Story* When Maria first came to TLC, she was desperate to find quality childcare for her three-year old daughter, Vanessa, in order to focus on getting permanent housing and securing a job. Maria immediately felt comfortable at TLC. The Family Services Coordinator and many of TLC’s staff were able to speak to Maria in Spanish, her primary language. Knowing that she could communicate easily with the teachers at TLC made Maria feel confident about her decision to enroll Vanessa in full-day day care.

Once her daughter was enrolled, Maria found a job at a downtown coffee house. With a steady source of income, Maria was able to secure an apartment with the help of one of Compass’ sister programs. At 26 years old, it was her first stable housing.

Homelessness and instability had also taken its toll on Vanessa. When she first came to the center, she was very shy and wary of her surroundings, but at TLC Vanessa blossomed. She had new experiences like interacting with children her own age, painting and playing dress-up. Her language, cognitive and social skills improved dramatically during her first year at TLC and her teachers felt confident that her abilities would soon be at an age-appropriate level.

The family continues to do well. With the help of TLC staff, Maria enrolled in school and is now working toward a bachelor’s degree. She has also become involved in the parent support activities offered at TLC and practices speaking English with Vanessa’s teachers.
Vanessa now has many friends, enjoys doing puzzles and playing house. Most importantly,
she is prepared to do well in Kindergarten and beyond.
