Volunteering

Compass deeply appreciates the many individuals and groups who volunteer with our
programs each year.  Projects include tutoring children, helping parents learn computer
skills and prepare resumes, teaching clients English as a second language, and helping
to clean, paint or maintain our family shelter or transitional housing program.

For a list of Compass's current volunteer needs, please view our
VolunteerMatch profile page
here. You may reply to all volunteer opportunities
through the VolunteerMatch website.

To coordinate a project for a group of volunteers, please contact us at (415) 644-0504
ext. 315, ldyas@compass-sf.org.

Please note:

  • Compass only offers limited volunteer opportunities during evening and weekend
hours.  Most opportunities take place during regular business hours when staff
    members are available.
  • Some volunteer positions that involve interaction with children require volunteers
to be fingerprinted and have a background check.  For these positions we
request an ongoing commitment when possible.
  • We ask that all volunteers be 17 and older due to the sensitive circumstances
faced by many of our client families.

Corporate Involvement

Compass truly appreciates the financial and volunteer support that so many organizations in San Francisco's business community provide to our agency and families. For a full list of our corporate and foundation partners, please click here.

Supporting Compass can provide your employees or colleagues with fun and rewarding team-building opportunities.  Options include:

  • Compass events – Sponsor or volunteer at one of Compass’s two annual fundraising events.
  • Group volunteer projects – Paint or clean in one of our program facilities, make and serve dinner to our shelter families, or bake cookies and read with the children at the Tenderloin Childcare Center.
  • Office collection – Coordinate an office collection of diapers, children’s clothing, school supplies, canned food, winter coats, or store gift certificates for clients’ basic necessities.
  • Host a Compass speaker – Invite a Compass representative to participate during your fall workplace giving campaign, or ask us to speak with your employees about family homelessness at any time of the year.
  • Holiday involvement – Coordinate an office gift drive, or participate as a company in our Adopt-A-Family program.

Contact us at (415) 644-0504 ext. 306 or kmansfield@compass-sf.org.

Compass’s Adopt-A-Family program pairs individuals or groups from the community with needy families who lack the resources to buy holiday gifts.  Donors receive a wish list for each member of their ‘adopted’ family, including toys, clothing, and household items.  We ask that donors spend at least $60 on each family member.

To be matched with a family this holiday season, or to be put on the mailing list for next season’s Adopt-A-Family, please email kmansfield@compass-sf.org.

Compass also organizes a yearly holiday party during which we give gifts to each of the children accessing our services (there are 300-400 during a typical holiday season).  You can help by organizing a toy drive at your school, office, or place of worship.  Please contact kmansfield@compass-sf.org.

Community Events

If you are interested in organizing a community event to benefit Compass, or contributing the proceeds of an already-established event to our programs, we would be happy to assist you in coordinating your event or providing Compass materials or a Compass speaker.  Please contact us at (415) 644-0504 ext. 306 or kmansfield@compass-sf.org.
