Spring Forward Creates Bright Futures

Spring Forward

More than 300 guests joined Compass Family Services and Sharon Stone at the agency’s annual Spring Forward luncheon to raise funds to benefit San Francisco’s most vulnerable families. Each year Compass helps more than 3,000 parents and children exit homelessness and achieve self-sufficiency.

The event, hosted by master of ceremonies Steven Dinkelspiel, President and Publisher of San Francisco magazine, raised more than $160,000 in support of Compass’ six programs that provide a vital safety net for San Francisco families in need.

“Create Bright Futures, the theme of this year’s event, reflects Compass Family Services’ firmly held belief that with the right tools and support every family can reach their full potential,” said Erica Kisch, Executive Director.  “I would like to extend a special word of thanks to Sharon Stone for her role in helping us exceed our fundraising goal and helping to ensure that Compass' services will continue to be there for any family who needs them.”

The keynote address was delivered by Marilyn Bunag, a former client who now serves on Compass’ board of directors.  Ms. Bunag received a standing ovation after sharing her story of overcoming years of drug abuse and domestic violence with the help and support of Compass Clara House, a transitional housing program for homeless families.

During the program, Compass presented its third annual Community Award to My New Red Shoes.  My New Red Shoes helps homeless children start the school year off with confidence by providing them with a new pair of shoes and a gift card for new clothing.  Guests also got a first-hand glimpse into Compass’ programs during a photographic presentation by San Francisco documentary photographer, Fran Meckler.

The event closed with an exciting live auction hosted by Ms. Stone.  Bidders had the opportunity to go home with sunglasses from designers like Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, and Gucci while showing their support for Compass’ work with families.

10,000 Diapers Collected for Homeless Children

In March, we asked our community for help when Compass Family Resource Center (CFRC) was in danger of not being able to provide diapers for its youngest clients.

Your response was tremendous.

In just two months, more than 8,800 diapers have been donated with more coming everyday. These donations will go a long way toward helping CFRC meet the needs of the growing number of families that count on the program for support. Last year 300 families took advantage of the classes, support groups and counseling services at CFRC, but in the first six months of 2010/11, the program has already served 314 families.

On behalf of CFRC and the entire Compass family, thank you for your support of our work to help San Francisco's most vulnerable families find long lasting stability.

Three Easy Ways to Support Compass

1. Save your paper shopping bags - Each week families on the shelter waiting list count on Compass Connecting Point to help them make ends meet with canned food, hygiene items and diapers, and having something to carry them in makes life a whole lot easier!

2. Collect travel-sized toiletries - Travel-sized toiletries are perfect for families living in temporary shelter. Products of all kinds are welcome.

3. Donate gently used school clothes - White collared shirts, tan or navy pants are especially needed as many San Francisco schools have dress codes. Because we are trying to boost the self esteem of our young clients, please give only clothing in good condition without stains or tears.

Donations may be dropped of in person at 995 Market Street, 5th floor during regular business hours, except Wednesday and Thursday between 12pm-3pm when the office is closed for staff meetings. The office is closed everyday between 12pm-1pm for lunch.

Collected a lot? Contact us at 415-644-0504 to make arrangements to drop off your donation.
