Their Story

After graduating in 2015 from Compass Family Services’ two-year transitional program, Compass Clara House, Berta and her three children were secured housing in a small apartment in Daly City by Compass’ housing team. Berta started work as a Medical Assistant at UCSF in Mission Bay after earning her certificate from Jewish Vocational Services. Her oldest daughter, Alicia, who maintained straight A’s while in our programs, prepared for college. Aliyah, who was just five, started Kindergarten, and 12-year old Edwin started middle school.

Today, Berta is working in a permanent position at UCSF’s Langley Porter Psychiatry as a Clinic Coordinator. Alicia is now a sophomore at UC Merced and is doing very well. Edwin is in 8th grade and is excited about entering high school soon. Aliyah is in the 2nd grade and continues to be the energetic entertainer of the family.

Berta and family just recently moved into a new, below-market-rate apartment in San Francisco. They are loving their new home and are very grateful to be back in San Francisco and closer to Berta’s work. Through Compass’ aftercare program, the family continues to receive therapy support as well as keeping in touch with former case managers and the many friends they’ve all made on the Compass staff.
