The Accounting Clerk is part of our finance team, which supports all programs across the agency.


The Accounting Clerk plays a key role in ensuring that Compass’ finance systems operate efficiently and correctly. They will support many aspects of the department, including assisting the Accounts Payable Manager in processing A/P transactions and assisting the Assistant Director of Finance and Controller in tasks associated with the monthly accounting close.

Accounts Payable & Expenses
• Processes rent subsidies and other AP vouchers to identify and obtain missing documentation
• Runs checks, gathers signatures and mails; processes stop payments and voids checks in AP and GL systems
• Audits expense reports to identify and obtain missing receipts
• Assists with the upload to general ledger of transactions paid by corporate credit cards
• Monitors CompassAP email, assisting with vendors and staff inquiries and other needs
• Provides back-up to AP functions when Accounts Payable Manager is on vacation

Accounts Receivable & Revenues
• Prepares bank deposits

General Ledger & Reporting
• Prepares monthly journal entries for bank fees, interest, etc.
• Reconciles less complex general ledger accounts monthly and quarterly, including cash, investments, fixed assets, and client funds held in trusts on an accurate and timely basis
• Counts, replenishes and records use of petty cash
• Tracks gift cards
• Prepares property tax, welfare exemption and other less complex returns
• Maintains, improves, runs, and distributes financial reports from general ledger system

• Assists with clerical duties including photocopying, scanning, and filing, supporting the paperless work environment
• Prepares documents for annual insurance renewals
• Assists with audit preparation
• Updates written policies and procedures
• Assists finance team with special projects and other responsibilities as assigned


• Two years general accounting education or equivalent experience
• Firm grasp of accounting principles
• Thorough understanding of Excel
• Extremely organized, detail-oriented, and thorough
• Ability to problem solve, work independently with minimal supervision and as a team member
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to interact with employees and vendors in a friendly and professional manner

Location & Covid Considerations

The Accounting Clerk will work at Compass’ main office at 37 Grove St. in San Francisco, less than a block from the Civic Center BART station. We are open to applicants who prefer a hybrid schedule, with some days of the week onsite and some remote. Compass has a wide range of precautions to keep everyone healthy and safe on site, including mandated masks, increased cleaning schedules, enhanced air filtration systems, and daily Covid self-screenings. Compass also requires employees to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19, including booster when eligible.
