She currently provides debt financing for affordable housing development at Silicon Valley Bank. Debbie previously served on the boards of Lyon-Martin Health Services and HealthRight 360. She earned her B.A. and master’s degree in public policy from UC Berkeley. Steven Dinkelspiel Board Whisperer Member Since 2019 Treasurer Steven is a fifth-generation San Franciscan and graduate of Yale University and Stanford Law School. He has worked as a program and financial analyst for the San Mateo County Manager’s Office, a Deputy District Attorney (San Mateo), owner and publisher of San Francisco magazine, and an active small investor in the film, commercial, restaurant, electronics component and real estate industries. Steven was motivated to become involved with Compass as homelessness has persisted as the preeminent challenge facing our beloved City. Linsey Thornton Director, Global Product Solutions COO Team, BlackRock Member Since 2019 Co-Chair Linsey Thornton leads Business Management and Strategic Initiatives for the Global Product Solutions COO team at BlackRock. She was a founding member of BlackRock’s local chapter for volunteer and grant making engagement where she became acquainted with Compass in 2015. Since then, Linsey has managed BlackRock's engagement with Compass and served previously as a member of the Compass Leadership Council for two years. Katie Giometti Business Development Lead, Sierra Member Since 2024 Secretary Katie leads Product Partnerships at Sierra, a conversational AI company. Previously, she co-led the fintech practice at Obvious Ventures, brokered foundational partnerships at Plaid, and scaled the retail tech division at BlackRock. She has been volunteering with Compass since 2018 and served on the Compass Leadership Council from 2019 through 2023. David Goldman Community Advisor Member Since 2023 Governance & Strategy Committee Chair David Goldman helps nonprofit organizations achieve their goals by applying practical management strategies and fostering workplaces where people can succeed. With broad experience in board governance, leadership development, executive coaching, fundraising, human resources, strategic planning, compliance, and organizational design, David has spent decades supporting both individuals and organizations through senior leadership roles, board service, and advisory work. Currently, David serves as Senior Advisor for Congregation Emanu-El, sits on the Executive Committee for Compass Family Services and the Wallenberg Democratic Club, and is a board member of the Jewish Home and Senior Living Foundation. His background in employment law compliance, diversity and inclusion, leadership development, fundraising, and capital campaigns allows him to effectively support nonprofits in advancing their missions and serving their communities. Chris Jackson President, SFG Asset Advisors Member Since 2024 Board Member Chris Jackson is a President at SFG Asset Advisors a single family office. As CIO, Chris is responsible for asset planning, global strategy, investment and manager research. Prior to SFG, Chris worked at several asset managers including Barbary Coast Capital Management LLC, Hoover Capital Management and Emerging Growth Management LLC. Chris received his BA in Economics from Lehigh University in 1990. Having raised three girls in San Francisco, Chris and his wife Kathleen believe strongly in supporting the community organizations. Kimathi Marangu Fellow, Distinguished Careers Institute, Stanford University Member Since 2023 Board Member Kimathi Marangu is a Fellow at the Distinguished Careers Institute at Stanford University. He is the former global head of Prepaid at Visa and a former fintech entrepreneur who co-founded Cartera Commerce, which was later acquired by Rakuten. Prior to his entrepreneurial ventures, Kimathi was an investment banker at J.P. Morgan and Morgan Stanley. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Vassar College and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Kimathi is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Kimathi’s personal mission is to improve the financial health, physical health, and mental health of a significant number of people. In addition to his service on the Compass board Kimathi serves as chairman of the San Mateo County Employee Retirement Association pension board (SamCERA). He is also a member of the board of trustees of Vassar College. Kimathi is a board member of the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health and an advisory board member for Stanford Federal Credit Union. Marybeth Shinn, Ph.D. Professor Emerita and Research Professor, Vanderbilt University Member Since 2026 Board Member Beth is a researcher who studies how to prevent and end homelessness. She taught for 46 years at Vanderbilt and NYU and now lives in Berkeley near grandchildren. Her 2020 book with Jill Khadduri, In the midst of plenty: Homelessness and what to do about it (Wiley], surveys research to show that we know how to end homelessness, if we devote the necessary resources. Beth has served on the Board of the Partnership for the Homeless in New York and the Homelessness Planning Council in Nashville, and she currently serves on the Research Advisory Board for the National Alliance to End Homelessness. Ken Whiting Of Counsel, Stoel Rives LLC Member Since 2026 Board Member Ken is a real estate attorney who has been a partner in several national and regional law firms. Earlier in his career, he worked in-house as the principal real estate attorney for Southern (now Union) Pacific railroad and as real estate counsel to a major U.S. wind-power company. He holds a BA from the University of Washington (English), an MA from Stanford University (Departmental Fellow in English), and a JD from the University of Chicago. Ken has provided pro-bono real estate legal services to Compass for almost twenty-five years. Those engagements exposed him to the deep commitment of the management and staff at Compass and inspired him to join the board to support Compass and its mission. Dana Corvin Community Volunteer Member Since 2022 Board Member Dana is a third generation San Franciscan. She was a principal and Vice-President of Cal-Steam, a wholesale plumbing supply distributor. Since selling the business in 2006, she has concentrated her efforts in the non-profit world. Dana currently serves on the boards of the Contemporary Jewish Museum (since 2008), the Morris Stulsaft Foundation (Secretary), San Francisco State University Foundation and the Jewish Senior Living Foundation. She has been active in the Jewish Community Foundation since 2000, serving as a board member and officer, as well as on the Jewish Community Endowment Fund. Dana is a former board member and officer of American Red Cross, M.t Zion Health Fund (Chair), Congregation Emanu-El, Jewish Family & Children’s Services, SF Jewish Community Center, the J Weekly, and United Way of the Bay Area for Alameda Co. She is an active supporter of the Guardian Scholar Foster Youth Program. Kimberly Garfinkel M.D., M.P.H. Obstetrics and Gynecology Physician Member Since 2022 Board Member Kim is a passionate women's health physician and advocate. She is a graduate of UCSF medical school. Additionally, she has masters in public health from UC Berkeley where she studied public health policy. Her community work involves equity and inclusion work and well as reproductive rights advocacy. She lives in San Francisco with her husband and four children and enjoys participating in Compass activities with her entire family. Jeanne Hormuth Director, Chief of Staff, KPMG LLP Member Since 2025 Board Member Jeanne serves as the Chief of Staff for KPMG's San Francisco office, where she provides strategic support to the managing partner and spearheads the implementation of key business initiatives. In her diverse role, Jeanne also champions the Inclusion Council, is a member of the KPMG Network of Women (KNOW) leadership team, and acts as the Community Impact Leader. This role includes overseeing the office's engagement with Compass Family Services and several other nonprofits in the Bay Area. Jeanne's deep passion for community service and her strong alignment with Compass Family Services' mission to support families in need inspired her to join the board. Lauren Kowal Community Volunteer Member Since 2019 Board Member Lauren received her BA as well as her law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She was formerly a partner at the law firm Coblentz, Patch, Duffy & Bass where she worked for over twenty years, focused on complex civil litigation at the trial and appellate levels. Lauren has been a proud Board member of Compass Family Services for 8 years and has served in a variety of leadership roles for the organization. Lauren also serves on the Leadership Council of the Tipping Point Community. Tim Moffet Head of Healthcare Commercial Banking, JPMorgan Chase Member Since 2017 Board Member Tim is a San Francisco native and is passionate about his work with Compass and the impact the organization has on the community. He has 20 years of experience in the financial services industry. Tim is also currently on the alumni fundraising committee for University High School. Adam Tait Financial Advisor, UBS Member Since 2019 Board Member Adam is a partner in a private wealth management practice based in San Francisco. His service on the Compass Board of Directors began after learning about the bay area housing crisis and touring Compass programs/facilities. His involvement with Compass stems from wanting to help provide support and advocate for services critical to bring transformational change for this invisible and vulnerable community. Jennifer DaSilva Community Volunteer Member Since 2024 Board Member Jenny has a 20+ year track record of working hands-on as both a nonprofit leader and an entrepreneur. Most recently, Jenny served as the founder and Executive Director of Start Small Think Big, a national nonprofit dedicated to advancing equity and inclusion in entrepreneurship by connecting small businesses with the resources and community they need to thrive. Jenny is a graduate of Yale University and Cornell Law School. She lives in San Francisco with her husband and two children. Doug Goelz Community Volunteer Member Since 2000 Board Member With over 20 years of commercial banking experience, Doug began as a financial analyst, and then assumed roles in product management for deposits and cash management services. Eventually, he was responsible for marketing to commercial clients with over $2B in assets. Doug has also been an entrepreneur, co-founding two successful businesses. Doug serves on the board because he believes that every child deserves a safe and stable home. Valerie Garcia Houts Managing Director, Venture Services, Merrill Lynch Member Since 2019 Board Member Valerie received her B.A. in economics from the University of California at Irvine and her MBA from the Haas School of Business. Christine Ma, MD Pediatrician, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland Member Since 2025 Board Member For over 30 years, Christine has been devoted to improving the health and well-being of people experiencing homelessness, raising awareness and elevating the issues faced by children and families who are unstably housed, and delivering clinical care to children who are homeless. As a Professor of Pediatrics at UCSF, Christine serves as the medical director of the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland’s Encore Medical Clinic which serves the unique health needs of unstably housed families. Beth Roy Jenkyn Community Volunteer Member Since 2019 Board Member Beth joined the board because she feels Compass does an excellent job helping those who need it most. She's grateful for the support she received at critical junctures in her life and wants to make sure others in our community have the supports they need. Beth served as a consultant for McKinsey & Co and has held a variety of positions in nonprofit and public sector focusing on family welfare. Lauren Thornhill Executive Director of Institutional Advancement, Hamlin School Member Since 2024 Development Committee Chair Lauren Thornhill currently serves as the Executive Director of Institutional Advancement at The Hamlin School in San Francisco, where she recently completed a $77M capital campaign. Throughout the year, our efforts focused on breaking generational cycles of homelessness, particularly among families of color in San Francisco. ANNUAL REPORT Charting a Path to Stability JULY 1, 2024 - JUNE 30, 2025 In our FY 2025 Annual Report, we explore how Compass is helping families navigate an increasingly complex path to stability. Across San Francisco rising costs, limited housing access, and long waitlists are making it harder than ever for families to find and keep a safe place to live. In response, Compass expanded and adapted — offering new shelter rooms, strengthening housing navigation, and piloting innovative solutions to close critical gaps in the system. This year, we supported more than 11,000 parents and children, meeting each one where they are and walking alongside them as they moved toward stability. From emergency hotel stays and targeted support for parents, to new housing location services and prevention efforts, we ensure families don't have to navigate housing challenges alone. At Compass, no two journeys look the same, but every family deserves a clear path forward. With the support of our community, we are building more responsive systems, expanding access, and helping families move from uncertainty to lasting stability. Shelter waitlists can stretch hundreds of families deep, forcing families to navigate months of uncertainty without stable housing. In February 2023, the San Francisco Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH) sought to expand access to emergency housing for families that provided the safety of a closed door, so Compass Family Services stepped up and launched our Compass Urgent Accommodation Voucher (CUAV) program. The CUAV program expanded Compass and the City’s shelter portfolio, through short-term hotel stays for families. In addition to a safe room, these families were provided intensive case management, ensuring the rooms are not just a stop gap for shelter, but a starting point for families to begin finding their way home. CUAV was designed as an emergency response for around a dozen families at a time, but demand quickly revealed a greater systemic need. Just like Compass Family Shelter, where we have supported families since 1990, CUAV is pairing emergency shelter with intensive case management, helping families navigate housing applications, secure income, enroll in benefits, and connect to community-based supports. CUAV ensures families are no longer navigating alone. READ MORE → Compass Housing Location Services Finding housing in San Francisco for extremely low-income families requires more than determination, it requires deep system knowledge, persistence, and a guide who knows the terrain. Launched at the start of FY25, Compass Housing Location Services was created to help families secure a place to call home. By combining skilled housing navigation, landlord relationships, practical tools, and hands-on support, the program helps families move from uncertainty toward stability. Launched at the start of FY25, the program strengthens the entire Compass continuum, connecting families who would otherwise fall through the cracks with an achievable path to housing stability. READ MORE → Transitional Age Youth Pilot For young parents navigating early adulthood while caring for a child, housing instability can cause enormous stress and hardship. These young adults are still developing the skills, stability, and support systems needed for adulthood, often without any safety net, so they require more intensive, growth-oriented support. Compass’ Transition-Age Youth (TAY) Pilot was designed to meet TAY-headed families at this critical crossroads, strengthening their access to the Homelessness Response System while providing tailored, trauma-informed support that recognized both their youth and their role as parents. Family Advisory Comittee | Compass has a staff of approximately 200 amazing professionals who do it all to help families achieve their goals. Below are Compass' staff leaders who guide and support our teams and work with the Board to set the organization's priorities and vision. FAMILY ADVISORY COMMITTEE Families at the forefront of shaping system change. The Family Advisory Committee (FAC) gives Compass parents the opportunity to contribute thoughts and feedback to shape Compass and citywide planning processes. FAMILY ADVISORY COMMITTEE As a part of the FAC, members are compensated for their time and meet twice a month to engage in advocacy and build relationships with community partners over the course of six months. FAC members additionally have a platform to meet directly with policymakers to voice their perspectives on needed investments in the family social safety net via the city/county and state legislative and budget processes. The voices and lived experiences of families provide crucial insight that cannot always be captured by numbers and data, ensuring that policymakers are aware and informed of the nuances of family homelessness and can adjust future service delivery accordingly. 2026 Cohort The 2026 cohort of the Family Advisory Committee convened beginning in January and runs until June 2026. Compass was founded in 1914 as Travelers’ Aid San Francisco to provide assistance to the 18.5 million newcomers who visited the city of San Francisco for the 1915 World’s Fair. Since then, our history has followed the trajectory of San Francisco's history, serving the most vulnerable populations during the Great Depression, World War II, immigrants and refugees from Asia in the 1950s, and homeless youth during and after the Summer of Love. Compass Family Services offers occasional and recurring individual volunteering opportunities. Fill out our Volunteer Interest Form, linked above, and our team will follow up with you in a few business days. What tasks do occasional volunteers do? If consistent recurrent volunteering is more than you feel comfortable committing to, occasional volunteering is for you! Compass Family Services often needs additional hands to help with events, such as our annual Halloween Costume pop-up, decorating program sites for holidays, our Toast & Taste fundraiser, our big holiday Adopt-a-Family program, among other events and projects. What tasks do recurring volunteers do? Make a lasting impact in your community by becoming a recurring volunteer. BASIC NEEDS ITEM ORGANIZATION & DISTRIBUTION Every day, we distribute countless basic needs items to families who need them. Our volunteers help us ensure that families have access to these resources by organizing donated goods for distribution to Compass families. These volunteers assist with: Sorting donated clothing, books, toys and homegoods. Organizing basic needs items in our client drop-in area. Helping receive and organize food bank deliveries. Preparing bags of groceries for families. Organizing baby items for client distribution. MEAL PICK-UP DELIVERY Each week, we rely on volunteers to retrieve donations of bread and prepared meals from community partners and deliver them to our sites. For this opportunity, volunteers must have access to a vehicle and have a valid driver’s license. These volunteers can be either occasional or recurring. SKILL-BASED PROJECTS We are always happy to have volunteers contribute their unique talents to support Compass families. In the past, this has included: Research — help us stay on top of the ever evolving landscape of public policies, grants, community services and resources. Digital marketing and communications — share with us your skills and creativity in graphic design, SEO, website optimization and more! Administrative support/data management — help us make sure our office space and databases are clean, organized, and up-to-date! Childcare — for those with experience in this type of work, you can assist our team by helping provide childcare while parents attend appointments. Direct client services — only for those with proper certifications and experience, you can volunteer with our team to assess client needs and connect families in need with services. Does Compass offer volunteer opportunities for students? We love welcoming students as volunteers and creating new ways for them to engage further with their community! Whether it’s during a school break, after school, or for a special event, our student volunteers contribute so much through their volunteer work. Student volunteers must be at least 13 years old Community service credit for school is available upon request. Please indicate the need for community service hours when filling out the Volunteer Interest Form. Volunteers below the age of 13 may be considered for special family volunteering events as long as there is parental supervision for the entire duration of the volunteering activity.
