Chris has more than 35 years of finance industry experience. He previously held positions at Credit Suisse, Lehman Brothers, JPMorgan Chase and Hambrecht & Quist. Chris has served on the Business Development Council, College of Business at San Francisco State University since 2008. He has also volunteered with American Corporate Partners as a mentor to military veterans transitioning to the corporate sector and has served as a member of the Pacific Stock Exchange Ethics & Business Conduct Committee. As a San Francisco native, Chris views his role on the Compass board as a meaningful way to improve the lives of homeless families and build a stronger, more supportive community.

After a career in advertising account management, Alison is a small business owner and book group moderator with Literary Masters, which organizes, curates and moderates book groups for parents, children and adults. She is also a founding board member of Taking Out Toxo, a nonprofit devoted to finding a cure for toxoplasmosis, as well as an owner of Petrali Wines, a small winery which donates 100% of its proceeds to Taking Out Toxo. Before joining the Compass board, Alison co-chaired Compass’ Centennial Celebration and Campaign. She strongly believes that Compass’ approach of housing plus deep support services will allow her adopted hometown of San Francisco to reduce and eventually eliminate family homelessness.

Tim is employed by JPMorgan Chase and has more than 10 years of financial services industry experience. Prior to JP Morgan Chase, Tim spent 5 years in corporate strategy positions in the technology and retail/consumer products sectors. He is currently on the alumni fundraising committee for University High School. As a San Francisco native, Tim is passionate about his work with Compass and the impact the organization has on the San Francisco homeless community.

Chad became a Compass supporter over ten years ago when he and his wife discovered the inspiring work of Compass Children’s Center where they witnessed the children of Compass clients getting the same type of quality early childhood education that their own daughter was getting. Chad joined the Compass board in hopes of getting better at understanding and working against structures that perpetuate inequality. He also serves on the Community Committee at Hamlin School.

Dalana Brand is a seasoned human capital executive with significant global leadership experience in various industries, Dalana has established a career profile that includes both corporate finance and human resources. Dalana Brand has worked at some of the world’s foremost Fortune 500 companies where she led global teams to design and develop innovative people programs that equitably engage employees, create a fair and inclusive culture, and help advance the business strategy of the company. Dalana’s most important work is serving as a fierce equality advocate. She is a frequent industry contributor and speaker on the topics of equality, gender pay equity, diversity and inclusion, and other human resources topics. Firmly believing in “lifting others while climbing,” Dalana is always involved within her community and supports several non-profit organizations.

Dennis had a career as a corporate and banking law attorney. Now retired, he spent most of his career at Wells Fargo Bank, where he was Senior Vice President and Assistant Chief Counsel until 1998. Prior to joining the Compass board of directors in 2010, he served on the board of another homeless services agency, Central City Hospitality House. He believes that service on the Compass board of directors supports an organization that transforms the lives of its clients every day.

Following her graduation from law school, Lauren served as a law clerk for the Honorable William C. Conner of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. She previously worked at the law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell.

Adam has lived in the San Francisco Bay area for the last 6 years. With a strong sense of community and responsibility, he is active in the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, where he has served as ambassador for the past 4 years. Adam supports and volunteers with Golden Gate Business Association, SF Marin Food Bank and the National Center for Lesbian Rights. His service on the Compass Board of Directors began after learning more about the housing crisis in the Bay Area and touring Compass programs.

Bob was a Founding Partner of DZH Phillips, with extensive experience in audits, reviews, compilations and tax planning, strategic planning, and succession planning. His expertise also includes management consulting and advisory assistance, involving forecasting, budgeting, business planning, and financing. Bob currently serves as the treasurer at Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture, and is a past treasurer of the Educational Foundation of Orinda. Bob joined the Compass board to help provide lasting solutions for homeless San Francisco families.

With over 20 years of commercial banking experience, Doug began as a financial analyst, and then assumed roles in product management for deposits and cash management services. Eventually, he was responsible for marketing to commercial clients with over $2B in assets. Doug also has been an entrepreneur, co-founding two successful businesses. Doug serves on the board because he believes that every child deserves a safe and stable home.

Lauren Kowal is a partner at the law firm Coblentz Patch Duffy & Bass, where her practice focuses on complex civil litigation at the trial and appellate levels. She has represented clients in both state and federal court in a wide range of matters, including securities law, antitrust, employment, intellectual property, consumer class actions, real estate, and other complex contract and business disputes. Anne worked for many years in adventure travel marketing with Backroads. While raising two daughters, she returned to the University of San Francisco for an MBA, and actively volunteered for 10 years with events and fundraising at Katherine Delmar Burke School. Anne is active on the Trails Forever committee to raise funds for the trails and programs in the Golden Gate National Parks. Since joining the board, Anne has chaired the Spring Benefit, Centennial Campaign and Annual Fund. Anne serves on the Compass board because she wants all children to have a place to call home.

Katie is a community volunteer who, as Co-Chair of Compass Family Services’ Spring Benefit for the past several years, has helped conceptualize, coordinate, and implement the multifaceted and largest fundraising event for Compass. She also has served as Co-Chair of Marin Country Day School’s Live Auction, and created, solicited, and delivered various highly desirable auction items/experiences for the school’s fundraiser. Previously, Katie was a Sports Marketing Account Manager, initiating, coordinating and running special events for various clients including NBA, Nike, and Gillette. Katie joined the Compass board because she was seeing so many families in need. She continues to serve because she believes that the support and services that Compass provides truly make a difference in the lives of homeless and at-risk families.

A fifth-generation San Franciscan, Steven is a graduate of Yale University and Stanford Law School. He has worked as a program and financial analyst for the San Mateo County Manager’s Office, as a Deputy District Attorney (San Mateo), as owner/publisher of San Francisco magazine, and as an active small investor in the film commercial, restaurant, electronics component and real estate industries. Steven was motivated to become more deeply involved with Compass as homelessness has persisted as the preeminent challenge facing our beloved City.
Valerie Garcia Houts

Valerie spent six years at Montgomery Securities in the Private Client Department prior to joining Merrill Venture Services in 2002. Valerie received her B.A. in economics from the University of California at Irvine and her MBA from the Haas School of Business. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Project Glimmer, a non-profit supporting disadvantaged young women & girls, and is active in leadership at St. Ignatius Church in San Francisco. She and her husband Tim live in San Francisco where they are raising their three daughters.

Mike is an innovative and results-driven Community Broadband Engineer with 15+ years of community-based IT experience, including designing and directing city-wide fiber and Wi-Fi initiatives. Mike currently manages a community-based ISP that provides internet access to over 8,000 users every day in San Francisco. Mike was also part of the Compass staff for 12 years, helping start Compass’ homeless family program back in the early 1990s. He stays involved with Compass because he knows firsthand the tremendous long-term benefits families receive from being part of the Compass family.

Laurel is an Associate Director with Hirsch Philanthropy Partners where she provides in-depth issue research and analysis, strategic planning, and program management to help individuals, families and foundations maximize the impact of their philanthropy. Previously, Laurel worked as Program Coordinator for International Specialized Programs at the University of Washington, managing in-bound study abroad programs for international students. Laurel is proud to serve as the Leadership Council representative on Compass' Board of Directors, and is motivated by the organization's commitment to providing comprehensive and personalized support to homeless families.
